AANS Membership for North American Neurosurgeons

A successful Dallas-area neurosurgeon, James Kevin Kaufman, MD, attended medical school at West Virginia University, graduating with honors. Besides serving satisfied patients at multiple locations, James Kevin Kaufman, MD, engages with fellow professionals through organizations such as the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS).

Founded in 1931, the AANS today serves more than 10,000 members around the world who benefit from discounted meeting attendance, patient education materials, access to scientific publications, and more.

Prospective members can apply to one of the four membership types available at AANS according to their citizenship and professional development. North American neurosurgeons can choose between the fellow membership, provisional membership, affiliate membership, and lifetime membership.

Fellows AANS (FAANS) members are neurosurgeons who reside in North America. FAANS need to be board certified by the Mexican Council of Neurological Surgery, the American Board of Neurological Surgery, or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Affiliate membership is for neurosurgeons who practice in the US but have been trained internationally, and for those certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery. Provisional members are neurosurgeons who meet the requirements for board certification in North America, while professionals retired from operative neurosurgery can apply for the lifetime membership, as long as they have spent more than 20 years as AANS members.
