AMA Issues Statement on COVID-19 Surge in Texas
With over two decades of medical experience, James Kevin Kaufman, MD, is a neurological and complex spine surgeon at a private practice he established in 2011. In addition, James Kevin Kaufman, MD, is involved with numerous professional organizations, such as the American Medical Association (AMA).
The AMA, which monitors the health of populations across the United States and publishes new and original research, recently issued a statement about the surge of COVID-19 cases in Texas. In addition to noting that the virus will remain a threat for an unknown length of time, the organization pointed out that intensive care units are almost at capacity.
Therefore, it urged Texas residents to take all recommended safety measures, including observing social distancing rules and wearing masks in public. In doing so, the AMA argues that Texans will be able to protect each other from contracting the virus, which can be deadly for certain populations. Should the surge continue, the organization suggests that much of the progress made so far in containing the spread of the disease could be undone.
